Plum Garden / 梅园书栈

梅园报晓 Plum Garden News—No. 4
October 20 – October 24

Dear parents,

I hope you all had a nice fall break. I am very happy to see that the children are back at school. It is nice to hear them laughing again.

First of all, I would like to thank our Pre-K parent, Sophie. Sophie is our school blog organizer. Last weekend, she added classroom blogs (Bamboo Garden and Plum Garden news) into the Shu Ren School blog. Please check it out at http://shurenschool.wordpress.com/shu-ren-classroom-blogs/. This will be a communication garden for students, parents, and me. I believe that in order to build a good learning environment I will need your help. Please feel free to leave messages or give me any comments, ideas, and feedback. Starting next Monday, I will post the Plum Garden News letter on our blog instead of sending it by email.

Before fall break, students have created their own playground standards. I am very proud of them for coming up with many positive thoughts and am appreciative of their hard work to make our classroom management more efficient. Children have been making progress in being able to solve their own conflicts, sharing, taking turns, and respecting everyone and everything in their daily school life.

To inquire in what we will do this week, we will start “A day of life in school 学校里一天的生活”. We will learn:
•    The school starting time.
•    Getting ready to go to school. What do you do before school starts?
•    Classroom activities and recess activities.
•    The children will know when is lesson time and break time and understand how to use the restroom and water fountain during break time.
•    Know how to keep the restroom clean and use self-hygiene.
•    Wrap up for school dismissal. What do you do before going home?
•    Road safety. What do you see on the way to the school and the way back to home? The children will know the traffic signals and to buckle their seat belts when in a car.
The new vocabulary in this inquiry will be added into the song “学校真正好 / School is wonderful.”

Trick or Treat! Halloween is coming; this is one of my favorite holidays. We already decorated our classroom and more activities will be introduced to the children, such as Halloween art projects and stories.

Please remind your child to return their homework on time on Wednesday mornings. If you have any questions about their Chinese homework or if your child is struggling and needs help with their homework, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I would be happy to answer your questions or help your child during the individual curriculum time. Cultivate a reading habit is very important for the children. Please encourage your child to read at least 10 to 15 minutes a day.
** Just for your reference, there are many Chinese books in the Berkeley Public Libraries, Albany Library and Oakland Public Library in Chinatown (12th and Franklin street) inside the Renaissance Center.

Language: We will review lesson one “ 花开了 Flowers are blooming” and more word adding, phrases and sentence exercises this week. We will start lesson two “上学 Going to school”. Children will learn how to write: 二 (two), 上 (up), 太 (very), 心 (heart), 叫 (call, yell), 早 (morning, early), 我 (I, me), 笑 (smile, laugh), 开 (open, drive). Language is a daily lesson.

Art: We will continue to finish our fall leaves project. The next project will be “我想要的学校游乐场 The playground that I would like to have at our school” The children will be creating their dream playgrounds. Art class is held every Tuesday and Friday.

Students will continue to learn how to work together, solve their own conflicts, care for each other, develop friendships, be responsible, appreciative, participative, taking care of the school’s equipment, and follow playground safety. Social studies and PSE are daily lessons.

P.E: Children will learn to walk and jump with ropes. We will continue to learn how to jump like a grasshopper. P.E. is held every Monday and Wednesday.

Kai
