Complementing An International Education with International Experience

As a key part of the curriculum offered at Shu Ren International School field trips are very much the norm for the students. Participation in them as well as hosting speakers in the classroom are a part of the experiential learning – learning through the reflection on doing – that happens in each class offered at the PreK2 – Grade 8 school. What is new and very exciting for the school is that this spring Shu Ren will join the ranks of distinct, independent schools in offering their first international excursion to China this spring. Shu Ren’s Middle Years Programme 1 (MYP 1 – equivalent to Grade 6) students will have the unique opportunity to fully stretch their language skills and expand their horizons with a two-week long field trip to Shanghai, China. The trip is organized in partnership with Xiwai International School in the Shanghai suburbs. The students, accompanied by Shu Ren teachers and parents, will stay in Xiwai’s dormitories and participate in classes and activities alongside native Chinese students. The two week schedule for Shu Ren students includes classes in math, philosophy and the Chinese arts along with visits to landmarks and historical sites.  The trip will also serve as an extension of the MYP students’ current studies on the effect of colonialism in China. Shanghai, with its contrast of modern skyscrapers rising next to old traditional buildings, provides a rich backdrop for such studies. With the world becoming increasingly interdependent, international education and experiences are essential. It is very thrilling for Shu Ren to partner with the MYP parents to provide this opportunity and to give...

Shu Ren will be participating in the Great Shake Out this Thursday!

Shu Ren International School will be joining millions of people worldwide to practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:15 a.m. on October 15 during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. Families and friends of Shu Ren students are also invited to join in on the Great ShakeOut. See following for some tips on how to prepare for earthquake. Consider what may happen when an earthquake shakes your area. Plan what you will do now to prepare, so that when it happens you will be able to protect yourself and then recover quickly. See this page for what to do if you have a disability or an activity limitation. Download Audio and Video “Drill Broadcast” recordings that have been created to provide instructions during your drill (Video versions have text captions). Do a “hazard hunt” for items that might fall in your home, school or working environment during earthquakes and secure them. Do an inspection for non-structural items (bookshelves, equipment, etc.) that might fall and cause possible injuries. Move or secure these items to provide a safer environment. Create a personal or family disaster-preparedness plan. Plan for your family’s specific needs (seniors, disabled, children, pets). Teach all household members how to use a fire extinguisher. If you are a business or organization, develop, review and/or exercise your continuity plan to identify and practice organizational responsibilities. Organize or refresh your emergency supply kits. Be prepared for the possibility that you, your family or those in your school or work place may need to remain in place for 2-3 days. Store at least 1 gallon (4 liters) of water per person, per day What...
