Shu Ren will be participating in the Great Shake Out this Thursday!

Shu Ren International School will be joining millions of people worldwide to practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:15 a.m. on October 15 during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. Families and friends of Shu Ren students are also invited to join in on the Great ShakeOut. See following for some tips on how to prepare for earthquake. Consider what may happen when an earthquake shakes your area. Plan what you will do now to prepare, so that when it happens you will be able to protect yourself and then recover quickly. See this page for what to do if you have a disability or an activity limitation. Download Audio and Video “Drill Broadcast” recordings that have been created to provide instructions during your drill (Video versions have text captions). Do a “hazard hunt” for items that might fall in your home, school or working environment during earthquakes and secure them. Do an inspection for non-structural items (bookshelves, equipment, etc.) that might fall and cause possible injuries. Move or secure these items to provide a safer environment. Create a personal or family disaster-preparedness plan. Plan for your family’s specific needs (seniors, disabled, children, pets). Teach all household members how to use a fire extinguisher. If you are a business or organization, develop, review and/or exercise your continuity plan to identify and practice organizational responsibilities. Organize or refresh your emergency supply kits. Be prepared for the possibility that you, your family or those in your school or work place may need to remain in place for 2-3 days. Store at least 1 gallon (4 liters) of water per person, per day What...

Preparing Our New Campus!

Shu Ren is thrilled to announce that our Elementary and Middle Schools (Kindergarten-8th grade) are in the process of moving to a new campus at 2125 Jefferson Avenue in Berkeley. School staff are hard at work preparing the new campus for the first day of school on September 1. The new site is a spacious and welcoming campus in the heart of Berkeley, only a few blocks away from our Pre-K campus at 1333 University Avenue. This school site—formerly the home of Aspire California College Preparatory Academy, located on the St. Joseph the Worker Church’s property—has 9 classrooms, a gymnasium, a kitchen, offices and a conference room. It has parking spaces, a large outdoor play area and a garden area, and is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood close to downtown and the U.C. Berkeley campus. Photos of the new campus as it is being renovated and prepared for the new school year are below. The school has created a blog to provide updates about the renovations in process. We look forward to welcoming students to our new home in a couple of...

Scenes from Summer Camp

We are finishing up our final session of Mandarin immersion summer camp at Shu Ren, and we had a great summer full of learning and fun. Students improved their Mandarin skills while learning about our city, Berkeley; native plants of California; elephant seals of Point Reyes; and sharks of San Francisco Bay through a combination of classroom learning, hands-on activities, and fun-filled field trips. See some photos from the camp sessions...

Shu Ren International School Proudly Announces the Launch of a Second Education Track For Non-Mandarin Speaking Students

Shu Ren International School, California’s first Mandarin immersion IB World School, is pleased to announce the launch of our inaugural sixth grade class in September 2015. The Middle School will serve both non-Mandarin speakers and bilingual Mandarin/English speakers. Both non-Mandarin speakers and bilingual students are welcome to apply to the Middle School at Shu Ren. The Middle School will offer sixth grade in the fall of 2015 and will grow through eighth grade by the fall of 2017. For our Middle School we will use the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) model* to implement an inquiry-based, constructivist pedagogy to engage all of our learners. The IB framework is an internationally-recognized curriculum used by the top independent schools in over 148 countries around the world. In addition to empowering our students to achieve their highest academic potential, conscious focus on character development along with attention to the whole child is integrated into our teaching methods by using the IB Learner Profile. In this the teaching staff guides our students to not only become critical thinkers and lifelong learners but also caring, open-minded, principled, and balanced global citizens.   *Shu Ren International School is an authorized PYP school and is a candidate for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), which is designed to prepare students for the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or the Career-related Programme (CP). Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP) or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted....
