Summer Camp
Mandarin Immersion Summer Camp 2013
Who Is It For? Children who are interested in learning Mandarin language skills and Chinese cultural knowledge through fun, immersion-based activities and hands-on field trips. No prior Mandarin skills needed.
Pre-K Camp: Ages 2 years and 6 months old to 4 years and 7 months (in June 2012). Must be potty trained.
School-Age Camp: Incoming kindergarteners to age 10.
When? The camp will be held in four sessions:
Session 1: 6/24 – 7/5
Session 2: 7/8 – 7/19
Session 3: 7/22 – 8/2
Session 4: 8/5 – 8/16
Camp runs from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm, with aftercare available until 6:00 pm for an additional charge. Morning care is also available between 7:30-8:30 free of charge.
Schedule/Activities:
Students will use inquiry-based learning to explore each session’s theme, develop their Mandarin skills and engage in exciting, hands-on activities. Each session will incorporate at least one field trip.
Pre-K Camp: The camp will be taught in a full Mandarin immersion environment and teachers will use gestures and movement to assist students who are new to the language. The Pre-K summer camp will be taught by one of Shu Ren’s head Pre-K classroom teachers. Planned themes for the Pre-K camp include:
6/24 – 7/5 – Animal Habitats
7/8 – 7/19 – Chinese Traditional Story Book Land
7/22 – 8/2 – Water and Sand
8/5 – 8/16 – Summer

School-age Camp:
The School-Age Camp’s main teacher will be Ms. Patricia Pope (Qiao Sun), who is currently a head elementary classroom teacher Shu Ren. Planned themes for the school-aged camp include:
6/24 – 7/5 – The Oak Trees of Oakland
7/8 – 7/19 – Migratory Blue Whales and Humpback Whales (Please note that the whale watching field trip has limited seating and any camp registrations received after May 1 will be on a standby basis for the field trip, and such students might not be able to attend the field trip).
7/22 – 8/2 – Wildlife in the Urban Habitat
8/5 – 8/16 – River Minerals and Gold

Camp Fee: $760/session (8:30am – 3pm)
Extended Care Fee: $140/session (7:30am – 8:30am, 3pm – 6pm)
Drop-in Care: $12/hour
Registration Fee: $50, or $25 if enrollment received by May 1 (non-refundable)
Note: We also will require some parent chaperones to accompany the field trips. Spaces for the over-night field trip are limited and are available on first-come-first-serve basis. Students who do not attend the field trip can stay in school with a teacher during their registered camp hours.
