Ready, Set, Read!
This year, Shu Ren celebrated Book Week from March 4 - March 8, culminating with World Book Day on Friday, March 8. During the week, students participated in a variety of activities that sparked their love of reading. There was DEAR, or Drop-Everything-And-Read, where K-G5 students, at their teachers’ signals, dropped whatever they were doing and dived into a book of their choosing. Mystery Guests Readers, made up of parents and Shu Ren administrators, visited Pre-K students and read “拼拼凑凑的变色龙“, “One Day, The End”, and ”Fancy Nancy”, among others. Some of our mystery guests even dressed up in costumes to mask their identities! Contests for the week included a door-decorating contest as well as the Read-It-To-Eat-It where families made an edible creation representing a favorite book.
Our students also got a chance to read to each other during Buddy Read. Pre-K students paired up with elementary students, each prepared a Chinese-language book they are fluent in and read together. We got so much positive feedback from students and teachers alike that we plan to do regular buddy reading throughout the school year.
The annual English-language Scholastics Book Fair was another Book Week highlight. Thanks to parents and students, we made nearly $2000 in book sales, with much of the teachers’ wishlists fulfilled! With the money raised, the library purchased new picture books, chapter books, as well as some non-fiction and graphic novels. Most of the new titles have already been added to the shelves, so come check them out!
